Under the control of the Romans, Ercolano was a renowned seaside resort where some of the richest Roman citizens used to spend their summer vacations. It has not been entirely excavated yet but you will be able to see the large houses and the ancient public buildings that are incredibly numerous compared to the small number of inhabitants (about 5,000). Unlike Pompei, the citizens of Herculaneum died because of the thermic shock due to the extremely hot pyroclastic surges, rather than buried under heavy ash.
