A fascinating tour in the history of two of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
You will visit Ercolano which, under the control of the Romans, was a renowned seaside resort where some of the richest Roman citizens used to spend their summer vacations. It has not been entirely excavated yet but you will be able to see the large houses and the ancient public buildings that are incredibly numerous compared to the small number of inhabitants (about 5,000). Unlike Pompei, the citizens of Herculaneum died because of the thermic shock due to the extremely hot pyroclastic surges, rather than buried under heavy ash.
Pompei in AD 62 suffered major damage from a violent earthquake and restoration works were still going on when on 24 August of AD 79 Mt. Vesuvius erupted and completely buried the city under a deep layer of hot mud and other volcanic material.
Highlights: The Forum, the Baths, the temples of Apollo, Jupiter and Isis, il lupanare “the brothel”, frescoes and mosaici, the bakeries and the body casts. It will be impressive to discover all aspects of everyday life of 1700 years ago.
The excavations of the ancient city of Pompei have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
