Galleria Borghese is an important museum in Rome based at the homonymous Villa Borghese “outside Porta Pinciana”. This splendid estate was an initial possession of the Borghese family, to which other lands were progressively annexed until the establishment of a huge park.
The rapid ascent of the Borghese, of Sienese origin, in the Roman context, culminated in the election of Pope Camillus (1605-1621) who, with the name of Paul V, started the great season of urban interventions and extraordinary collecting enterprises. The construction of the Villa Borghese began in 1607 and starting from 1770 the Villa was subjected to a radical renewal of the decorative apparatus. In the new layout, the architect Asprucci arranged the greatest masterpieces of ancient sculpture, in addition to Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne, according to a new exhibition criterion, placing them at the center of each room and linking the entire decorative theme to the iconographic core of the sculptural group. Despite the removal of the archaeological sculptures of the ancient collection of Cardinal Scipione – consequent to the sale imposed in 1807 by Napoleon to Camillo Borghese (1775-1832) – and the subsequent nineteenth-century additions, still today, the decoration of the rooms reflects the criteria of the exhibition wanted by Antonio Asprucci.
Among the main works now exhibited at the Borghese Gallery: Apollo and Daphne and many other works by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the famous statue that represents Paolina Bonaparte portrayed by Antonio Canova, the most famous masterpieces by Caravaggio, including the Bacchino sick, the boy with the fruit canasta, David with the head of Goliath, San Giovanni Battista, the San Girolamo, and again works by Correggio, Tiziano, Rubens, Raffaello Sanzio and many others.
